FM-Over-30-YearsFamily medicine education is a source of great pride for WellSpan York Hospital. Our residency program was one of the first five pilot programs in the United States, and is fully accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).

The first family medicine residents began their training at WellSpan York Hospital in 1968, one year before Family Medicine was officially recognized as a specialty. Throughout the years, the program has thrived in a hospital with an unusually strong commitment to graduate medical education, and in a community where family physicians are the major providers of primary care.

Today, York's Family Medicine Residency remains one of the best programs not only in Pennsylvania, but in the entire country. Numerous residents in recent years have been recipients of the AAFP/Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education (formerly Mead Johnson Award), a national program which recognizes the best Family Practice residents since 1952.

Program Goals

The residency program is reviewed annually by the faculty and members of the department of Family Medicine. We constantly strive to update, innovate and fine-tune our curriculum to ensure our program goals are being met or exceeded.

The faculty and department members also recognize the additional challenge that presents itself to each resident: that of striking a suitable balance between work ethic and personal priorities.  The schedule over three years offers quality of education and quality of life.

FM-Medical-KnowledgeMedical Knowledge

  • To teach well the science of medicine required for competent and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care
  • To organize teaching services with an emphasis on education, not service requirements
  • To provide well-structured teaching rotations with an optimal balance of continuity of patient care, responsibility for patient management, and didactics and bedside teaching
  • To provide an appropriate mix of quality inpatient and outpatient educational experiences
  • To teach the proper and expert use of a wide array of drugs and pharmaceuticals
  • To emphasize preventive care and health promotion in a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home

Procedural Skills

  • To teach in an organized and structured fashion procedures commonly performed by family physicians
  • To provide adequate supervision, feedback, and documentation of procedures performed
  • To provide a monthly procedural-oriented workshop for residents
  • To provide flexibility for residents who require specific or more intensive procedural skills

  • To provide insight and teaching in effective doctor-patient relationships
  • To teach residents how to deal effectively with common psycho-social problems

  • To provide faculty trained in family therapy and to assist and demonstrate technique to residents in the family practice center

Practice Management Skills

  • To provide an opportunity for residents to work in a number of different private and public outpatient facilities

Thomas M. Hart Family Practice Center

FM-Thomas-Hart-FPCTeaching and providing experience in ambulatory medicine are the prime focus of our Family Practice Center (FPC). Here, emphasis has been placed on developing a realistic practice atmosphere, attending to patients efficiently, utilizing other professionals appropriately, and maintaining awareness of the business side of the practice.  We are a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home and provide training in quality improvement and population health management.

A Quality Environment For The Delivery Of Quality Care.

The Family Practice Center is attractive, functional, and convenient and is located on the ground floor of the Marie Ketterman building. The Family Practice Center contains 26 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, three nursing stations and preceptor offices, four resident work areas, and a laboratory.

FM-Quality-EnvironmentThe administrative area contains resident work cubicles, call rooms, resident lounge, chief resident office, faculty offices, administrative work space, and a conference room. The family practice center is conveniently located to hospital floors, ICU's, ER, and labor hall.

Routine laboratory tests are performed in the FPC by a medical technologist. An office laboratory course is taught in the Center's lab. More complicated laboratory tests are sent to the main hospital laboratory.

On the cutting edge of technology, the FPC implemented an EMR in 2006. It is a system-wide record and links with the main hospital's EMR. It is used by all WellSpan offices and specialists.  Our focus links on quality and data registry allow us to manage our practice population through regular meetings and improvement processes.

Multiple workstations and wireless laptops are available throughout the center's work spaces and a voice recognition program links to the EMR. Patient information is readily available through Cerner Power Chart and all computers have a direct link to the internet. Access to reference programs such as MDConsult, Update, and Visual Dx are provided via internet to all residents. Residents, faculty and nurses form four patient care teams that ensure continuity and provide a sense of teamwork.

Taking A Team Approach To Caring For A Diverse Population

FM-Team-ApproachUtilizing effective teamwork is the standard practice here at the Thomas Hart Center. Our office staff, nursing staff and medical staff strive toward one common goal: quality patient care with an emphasis on patient satisfaction.

The patient mix at the Center is diverse, a socio-economic cross-section of the community we serve. Approximately 27,698 patient care visits are recorded yearly. A breakdown by financial class reveals the following: 56% Medicaid, 20% commercial payors, 12% Medicare, 7% private/self pay; 5% other, practice population per age band includes: 33% pediatrics, 57% ages 19-64, 10% is 65 years old or older.

The Center participates in several local HMO's which include UPMC and United Health Care. Exposure to working with accountable care organizations is another area of experience the residency faculty believes important to the overall program.  In addition, we participate in the PA Residency Collaborative which is a forum to share data and best practices with all PA residencies. 

Skills Lab and Simulation Center

The Kinsley Family Foundation Medical Simulation Center at WellSpan York Hospital opened in May 2008.

The center contains rooms where clinicians will perform mock procedures and emergency treatment on mannequins. The mannequins - two adults and two pediatric - are electronically monitored to respond the same way as a live patient during a medical episode.

The center also features a childbirth simulator.

Video and audio recording devices monitor the procedures. Participants will review recordings in the center’s debriefing room where an instructor critiques their performance.

Clinicians also will learn to perform laporascopic and endoscopic operations on sophisticated devices in the task training room. This is a very exciting addition to our educational resources at WellSpan York Hospital.
