Summer Internship for Students Underrepresented in Medicine
WellSpan Health is pleased to offer our inaugural Summer Internship for Students Underrepresented in Medicine, which takes place in summer 2023. We are committed to increasing diversity within medicine and our goal is to provide motivated and interested preclinical medical students, or rising MS-2, with in-depth exposure to clinical medicine early on in their medical school education.
We encourage students who are currently in their first year of medical school who are interested in experiencing clinical medicine to apply to our four-week summer internship. We are offering eight funded positions, which include housing and meals.
The Association of American Medical Colleges defines underrepresented in medicine as “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.”
Internship Opportunities
Our summer internship curriculum includes didactic, simulation and clinical training designed to provide medical students with hands-on experience in many aspects of medicine. Internship opportunities are available at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital and WellSpan York Hospital.
Didactic Training
Medical students will participate in procedure workshops, simulation sessions, social medicine initiatives, ultrasound workshops, resident conference, journal club, lectures given by our faculty and residents and community outreach. Each student will also be paired with a WellSpan faculty mentor.
Clinical Training
Each student will have the opportunity to experience clinical medicine including Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Ob/Gyn. Students are exposed to tremendous diversity in clinical pathology and patient populations by rotating through the different clinical areas within WellSpan Health entities.
Important Dates
Summer fellowship dates: May 30 – June 23, 2023. Completed application deadline: February 24, 2023. Notification of decision to student: March 10, 2023. Student confirmation of acceptance: March 17, 2023.
