Program Director's Message
Thank you for your interest in the WellSpan York Hospital Emergency Medicine residency program! Currently in our 30th year and with over 200 graduates, our residency has a long history of training excellent emergency medicine physicians, educators and leaders.
WellSpan York Hospital is a busy, high acuity community academic hospital with a focus on delivering high quality patient care and providing exemplary resident education. Last year our annual ED patient volume was 85,000 and these volumes and acuity continue to rise. We are a level one trauma center and a comprehensive stroke center. We have a large catchment area which provides us with a unique opportunity to see a diverse patient population and pathology. While we have a thriving medical education program with many residencies and fellowships, ED care and procedures are performed by our EM residents.
What makes our program unique? We have expert trained faculty in a multitude of specialties including ultrasound, education, simulation, forensic medicine, toxicology, wilderness medicine, global health, disaster medicine, palliative care, administration, prehospital care, and research. We have interest tracks in all of these areas for those residents who want to start developing their niche early on. Our faculty is here because they have a passion for working with residents, teaching and mentoring. We continue to expand our faculty to accommodate our increasing patient volume and acuity and to ensure excellent clinical teaching.
Not only we will be providing top notch clinical and didactic education to help build your EM foundation but we also help you plan and succeed at whatever career path you choose. After you complete your residency training here, you will be prepared to work anywhere! Our graduates can attest to that and have worked in a variety of settings ranging from working in small single coverage EDs to becoming top notch educators and leaders in large medical school settings. Our residents have pursued and successfully completed fellowship training in ultrasound, toxicology, tactical medicine, healthcare policy, hyperbaric medicine, simulation and critical care.
We pride ourselves on the supportive atmosphere and family feel of our program. Our residency leadership team is here to support you throughout your three years and our residents’ comradery is palpable. We are dedicated to helping residents achieve proper work-life balance and promote resident wellness. We welcome resident feedback and ideas and use this to take our program to new heights. We are excited for the opportunity to welcome you to our family and for you to start our career in Emergency Medicine with us!
