Experience That Lasts A Lifetime.

Teaching.  Service.  Excellence.  A Solid Foundation for the Future.

Helicopter-ambulanceThe WellSpan York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year program utilizing a PGY-1, 2, 3 format, accepting 12 residents per year. Completion of our residency program allows eligibility for certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME.

We strive to continually improve and we are well-positioned to meet the clinical and administrative challenges of residency training in Emergency Medicine both now and into the future.

Our residency program and ultrasound fellowship are based at WellSpan York Hospital, a large community teaching hospital. We are a fully accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Pennsylvania (approximately 85,000 annual ED visits).  The residency program provides additional patient care experiences at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Chambersburg Hospital, with opportunities to train at Lehigh Valley Hospital as well. These diverse centers provide an outstanding breadth of training experiences.

To provide our residents with the foundational knowledge in EM while letting them explore their individual interests, and in turn produce excellent clinicians, educators, and leaders in Emergency Medicine.

Service.  Deliver exceptional patient care experiences for all of those we care for in the Emergency Department, prehospital care settings, and throughout the WellSpan Health system

Excellence.  Strive to reach superior performance levels in clinical care, research and educational innovations, leadership training, patient safety, and quality and performance improvement

Our Program

Clinically-Oriented.  Our program stresses individual patient contact and decision-making at all levels of training.  This progressive responsibiilty and exposure to high-volume Emergency Medicine are cornerstones of our program.  We are actively targeting resuscitation skills and science as one of the featured areas of our program and we're incorporating our excellent clinical experiences, simulation sessions, procedural training, ECG interpretations, and focused ultrasound imaging of the critically ill patient in order to achieve our goals in this area.

Fundamentally Sound.  We excel at enhancing the clinical and didactic experiences of our residents.  While we strive to foster success in all academic, teaching, research, and organized medicine activities, our main goal is producing outstanding clinical Emergency Physicians.  Our graduates are ready to succeed wherever they choose to practice.

Diverse Educational Opportunities.  Our faculty come from a variety of training programs and backgrounds, and can provide you specialty experience in point of care ultrasound, forensic medicine, wilderness medicine, academics and education, research, critical care, disaster medicine, palliative care, health care policy, ED administration, and prehospital care. We host multiple unique conferences a year, and have the support to perform high quality research.

Fully Committed to Meeting the Accreditation and Clinical Demands of the Future.  Our long-standing success with ACGME and RRC accreditation continues with our embracing of the ACGME Next Accreditation System and our integration of the Emergency Medicine Milestones for evaluation of residents' progress during their training. Our graduates serve in a wide variety of formal leadership roles, including Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA), Medical Directors/Assistant Medical Directors of Emergency Medicine groups or departments, Corporate CEO, Vice Chair, Residency Directorship positions, Fellowship Directorship, and other regional and national leadership positions.  Over 20 graduates have assumed leadership roles in various work and professional areas, and we are understandably proud of the primary role our graduates have in shaping the practice of Emergency Medicine for the future.

A History of Excellence in Teaching and Clinical Service

The WellSpan York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program began in 1989 with five residents per year.  Since then, many individuals have fostered the growth and development our programs – resident and student education, research, and clinical care.  Our current class size of eleven residents per year reflects the culmination of these 27 years of progress, leading to our stature as a leader in Emergency Medicine residency education.

Greater than 200 graduates currently practice in a wide variety of locations, including academic and community positions.  Several residency graduates have gone on to pursue fellowship training in ultrasound, toxicology, tactical medicine, healthcare policy, and critical care. Please explore the rest of our website for more information about our Residency Program, our Graduates, and our Faculty and Staff.  We think you will be as impressed as we are with the talent, diversity, and accomplishments of the people who make up our exceptional Residency Program!
