The Department of Dentistry at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania is searching for a highly motivated individual who can fulfill the duties of Chief Resident in General Practice Dentistry. To be considered, the applicant must be a graduate of a fully-accredited one-year, hospital-based GPR program, preferably with career interests in hospital-based GPR practice.

WellSpan York Hospital is a 575-bed community teaching hospital. Our residencies encompass a comprehensive range of medical and dental education and integrate more than 200 students each year as part of affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania and University of Maryland Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and Penn State University at Hershey. These residency programs involve almost 110 graduate physicians and dentists. We also offer a multifaceted program of continuing medical and dental education.

Medical and dental students who choose WellSpan York Hospital for their residency programs benefit from our active medical staff, including primary care and referral practitioners in practically all recognized specialty areas.

Consider, too, that more than 80,000 patients pass through the doors of our Emergency Department and Outpatient Department, affording each resident with a broad range of clinical exposure. In addition, WellSpan York Hospital is the areas Emergency Medical Resource Center and an accredited Regional Trauma Center.

Our Commitment To Education Is Clearly Evident

In addition to excellent clinical facilities, our campus features an education pavilion devoted to our educational components. The Robert L. Evans, M.D. Education Pavilion houses classrooms, a 16,000-volume library, allied health education classroom-labs, a media services center and an auditorium. WellSpan Research Center, houses the hub of a sophisticated computer network, enabling residents to pursue original research and analysis.

A Proud Center of Dental Excellence

The General Practice Residency in Dentistry has been in existence at WellSpan York Hospital since 1981. There are eight dental GPR positions.

Our current facility has a total of 24 well-equipped state of the art operatories. The WellSpan Dental - Hoodner Dental Center is located in the Queensgate shopping center. Operating with state of the art equipment for digital dentistry, scanning and 3D printing.

There were approximately 22,000 patient visits to the Department of Dentistry last year. The diversity of age range and clinical problems enable our dental residents to receive a broad range of experience.

Dental-res-chief-excellenceThe residents are supervised by a full-time program director, full-time assistant program director, and three staff dentists. A large volunteer teaching staff also broadens the dental residency experience, with representation from both general dentistry and multiple specialty areas.

The program features a structured didactic component which includes journal club, treatment planning sessions and clinical conference which meet weekly.

The Individual Selected For Chief Resident Must Be Prepared To Assume A High Level Of Responsibility.

In order for the selected individual to participate in departmental activities, the Chief Resident is expected to have an encompassing understanding of hospital dentistry. The Chief Resident must possess the capacity for accelerating independence and be willing to accept the challenge of managing responsibilities in a multitude of areas such as comprehensive patient care, teaching and administration.

The specific duties assigned to the Chief Resident include:

  1. Functioning as the liaison between the program director , assistant program director and first-year residents.
  2. Serving as a role model to first-year residents via clinical judgement, patient management skills and dedication to the residency program.
  3. Administering the inhouse patient consultation services and outpatient clinic emergency services.
  4. Making rounds in the event of the program directors absence.
  5. Maintaining availability for back up call.
  6. Monitoring first-year resident activities as well as scheduling special lectures and events.
  7. Participating in weekly seminars assigned by the program director.
  8. Directly supervising first-year residents as well as fourth-year students.
  9. Participating in quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs in the department.
  10. Taking part in the residency application and interview process for the following years residents.
  11. Research activity is available and encouraged.
  12. Provide direct patient care involving inplantology and more complex restorative cases.

Stipend Information

The Chief Resident will be designated PGY-2 and will receive a base salary plus benefits equal to other PGY-2 residents in the hospital. One week is made available for his or her education conference with a generous limit of reimbursement expenses.

Other benefits of this assignment include free hospital meals as well as clinic clothing provision and laundering.

The residency year begins July 1, and is one calendar year in duration.
