Diversity and Inclusion Summit 2.0 a Big Success - WellSpan Health Diversity and Inclusion Summit 2.0 a Big Success
Tuesday, October 22, 2019

On Thursday October 17, WellSpan York Hospital hosted the second WellSpan Health Graduate Medical Education Diversity and Inclusion Summit. This new series focused on issues of diversity and inclusion that are important to all of us. Over 140 attendees, including Residents, Fellows, and faculty from the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital Family Medicine Residency and the WellSpan York Hospital Residency/Fellowship Programs, spent most of the morning learning, sharing, and developing potential action items to help us continue to improve our organization and community in these areas. The keynote speaker was William McDade, MD, PhD, the inaugural Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) – the group which accredits Residency and Fellowship training programs nationally. Dr. McDade stressed the importance of building a recruiting pipeline directly to the schools and neighborhoods of our communities, and gave a wonderful overview of the current national work in this area. Residents/Fellows, students, and faculty then split into small groups to discuss key items and develop recommendations for the future. The groups shared information and comments at the end of the session and we look forward to working through the various suggestions to help with future improvements. The group facilitators included our Regional Human Resources Directors, our Director of the Employee Assistance Program, and WellSpan Diversity and Inclusion and Medical Education leaders. Special thanks to our planning committee, including Kim Brister, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition, Diversity and Inclusion; Ana Tovar, PhD, David Emrhein, MA, Administrative Director of Medical Education/ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO), and to our facilitators Kim Wakefield, Ashley Zinn, and Denise Garman (Regional Human Resources Directors); and Michael Diller, PsyD (Director of the WellSpan Employee Assistance Program/EAP). We’re already looking forward to next year and another great milestone in our journey toward improving Diversity and Inclusion at WellSpan Health.
