Physician members of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS), the national organization which for nearly 40 years has been the sole national body representing all of the roughly 260 general surgery residency training programs in the United States, have elected Dr. Richard Damewood of WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania as their 2015-16 President on April 22 at the Annual Meeting held in Seattle, Washington.  Dr. Damewood will help to develop and direct the programs of the Association which include education of America’s surgeons of tomorrow, and coordination with Medicare, other payers, as well as the regulatory bodies, such as the American Board of Surgery, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and its Residency Review Committee, all of whom help to set and maintain the standards which surgeons need to attain before being authorized to commence patient treatment. During the next year, Dr. Damewood will Chair the APDS’ 22-member Board of Directors, and its Executive Committee, and will be making key appointments to advance the purpose and agenda of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery.
